HERBAL STUDIES: PEPPERMINT

Updated: Dec 30, 2021

Let's explore peppermint and all its great uses.

Aloha Friends! Today I am sharing about one of the herbs from my herbal studies, peppermint! Peppermint is an herb I use in quite a few of my tea recipes. So it is fair to say it is a staple in my apothecary.

Peppermint is commonly used in herbal medicine for digestive issues. This aromatic herb helps to calm the muscles of the digestive tract, as well as helps to alleviate intestinal gas, and upset stomachs.

However, it can also be used for headaches and in easing cold and flu symptoms. Menthol is an active part of peppermint, and menthol is great for the respiratory system. Peppermint tea can help to thin mucus, providinging relief to stuffy noses. In earlier times when herbal medicine was the common form of medicine, mint leaves were applied to foreheads and temples as an early headache remedy.

Therapeutic uses of peppermint range from:

  • indigestion

  • cold and coughs

  • muscle aches

  • tension headaches

I personally use it as the first form of help when treating my family for stomach aches and headaches, in the form of tea and essential oils. We use a peppermint essential oils blend on temples at the first signs of headaches, and we also use it in tea form for upset stomachs.

Below I share a recipe that I personally use for a tea, that I call the "Tummy Tamer" blend. Feel free to use it in your home as well. It is safe for both kids and adults as it is an herbal blend with no caffeine. Enjoy!
